The paper is aimed at demonstrating a methodological potential of the lifestyle approach when analyzing situations in transitional societies (societies-in-crisis). As an initial model for transitional society is used Merton's concept of anomie understood a result of the imbalance between social (institutional) and cultural (the meaning of success) components of a social system. The life success concept is chosen as one of the basic categories for analysis of transition states. Furthermore, the author reflects on the problem what cultural mechanisms have a key influence on construction of socially and personally significant model of success that plays a role of 'social magnet' when developing personal life strategies. Possible alternative answers to this question include deliberately chosen values and preferred styles of life.
