Abstract

The article represents a short polemic delivered by Wallerstein in a debate with modernization theorist Alex Inkeles at the meetings of the American Sociological Association in 1975. Wallerstein sought to demonstrate that modernization theory failed to create an adequate image of world social development. He also outlined the alternative theoretical and historical approach.
