dc.description.sponsorship	We review different searches for isolated brown dwarfs and planetary mass objects (M <13MJup) which we have conducted in the optical and infrared ranges, in the very young (age of 1–8 Myr), nearby (d ~ 350 pc) σ Orionis cluster. We describe the main characteristics of this substellar population: spectral properties, effective temperature, spatial distribution, and the presence of discs. We present an initial mass spectrum in the substellar domain.	uk_UA
