Сільська інтелігенція (учителі, священики, лікарі та інші представники найбільш освіченої верстви) відігравала важливу роль у покращенні життя селян, оскільки вона була ретранслятором західних ідей і культурних впливів.; The present publication contains the materials of the author's field researches conducted in the settlements of Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Ternopil regions during 2004–2006. Information achieved by questioning of respondents shows the leading role of the rural intelligentsia in a public life of Galician village at the end of the 19th century till the 1930s. Rural intelligentsia (teachers, priests, doctors and other representatives of the most educated layer) played an important role in the improvement of the everyday life of peasants as it was the mediator due to which the Western modern ideas and cultural influences came into sight. Український письменник, перекладач, дослідник літератури своєю працею допомагав глибше та краще осмислити й зберегти досвід і надбання традиційної народної культури. У публікації представлені оригінальні тексти, якими «славіли» Варвару та Миколая; а також текст вистави «Цар Ірод», що передавався усно від покоління до покоління. Докладно описано психологічні й технологічні моменти підготовки та проведення дійства: створення костюмів, виготовлення масок, «звізди», панцирів, шабель та іншого реквізиту, а також орієнтація на певні статево-вікові параметри учасників видовища.; The publication of the Olexandr Ivanov's essay «The Christmas Carols in Kyiv and “King Herodus” Performance at the End of the 19th Century» exposes the unsufficiently explored sides of urban people’s everyday life at the boundary of the 19th–20th centuries. A figure of Olexandr Ivanov, a collector of the «Christmas Carols...» is worth of notice. He is the Ukrainian writer, translator and literature critic who helped us with all of his work to better comprehend and preserve the experience and achievements of the traditional folk culture. Submitted in the present article are the original texts with which they «praised» St. Barbara and St. Nickolas and also the «King Herodus» libretto which had been passed orally from one generation to another. The essay describes in detail the psychological and technological features of preparing and conducting of the performance: designing of costumes, making of masks, a Star, an armour, the sabres and other essential elements, as well as an adherence to the particular gender and age parameters of the performers.
