Monetary circulation on ihe territory of Kursk Severiane began in the 1st quarter of the 9th century and was interrupted in the last quarter of the 10th century at the time of forced annexation of this territory to Kievan Rus. Dirhems of Arabian Caliphate along with their half pieces, which arrived from Khazaria and circulated by the piece, were the only coins used there throughout all the 9th century. Since the beginning of the 10th century the southern route of dirhems arri\al was replaced by the eastern (Volga-Oka) one through which many more Central Asian minted dirhems began to come to Kursk area of the Seim reaches.

Over 30 numismatic artifacts have been found by now on the territory of the upper reaches of the Tsna, Moksha, and Sura rivers populated by the Mordva-Moksha tribes in the 7th - 11th centuries. These include 1 hoard containing over 16 silver al-Kufa coins (11 of which have been defined) and 23 individual finds. 5 dirhems of the 1st third of the 10th century and 6 its imitations have been defined in the hoard.
