The osteological material from the Epigravettian Yudinovo site in the Russian Plain was studied. Detailed paleontological and archaeozoological analyses of the faunal complex were carried out. As shown by the animal remains, the subsistence of the sites of Western Russia was based on hunting. Mammoth constituted the preferred hunting prey, followed by fur animals. During the final stage of the Late Pleistocene the climate became cooler, drier and the tundra-steppe zone was predominating. The analysis of the osteological material leaves one in no doubt that the Yudinovo site was inhabited seasonally. The absence of animal remains procured in the summer proves that Yudinovo was the cool season settlement. The taphonomic and palaeobiological analyses shows that the bone complexes at the site were constructed from body parts and bones that were extracted from freshly killed mammoths.

We studied Late Paleolithic archeological sites Yudinovo, Bugorok and Eliseevichi for pollen analysis. There are obtained data on the paleoenvironment change of the Desna river basin. High-resolution pollen data made it possible to get a chronology of events related to human settlements during the Upper Paleolithic in the study area.

At the beginning of Late Valdai Glacial human communities actively populated Desna River basin. The earliest sites of Late Paleolithic are situated on watershed areas. The progressing cold snap and the formation of Periglacial landscapes did not correlate with intensive peopling of the central part of Eastern Europe. After the Last Glaciations Maximum the areas of human habitations sufficiently extended. The river valleys were occupied by the settlements with dwelling constructions. Large sites were placed on watersheds and on low terraces above the flood plain. Also, Late Paleolithic communities actively populated the territory of Desna basin in Late Glacial period. That times, the cultural layers of a number of settlements defined by the considerable densities of animal bones, tools and burnt bones, as well as bone dwellings. That is, the Late Glacial settlements characterized by long term occupational activities.
